I too was always personally surprised that Tom didn’t follow up with Leon like Elton John did. I know Tom loved and respected Leon as both a talent and as a man. Maybe there was a falling out when the whole thing fell apart with Tom & Denny Cordell & the law suit over Tom’s record contract with Shelter. Maybe it was just time constraints for a busy Rock ‘n’ Roller who had lots of touring & recording to do. I don’t know. However, in any case, Tom & Leon can be together now, hopefully, both happily wearing their sun glasses at night. 🙂 Miss you both! <3

Layla, great points and it makes perfect sense. I’m guessing if they are wearing their glasses, they also have on their distinctive tophats.

I often wondered why TP didn’t seem to catch up with Leon later in life. It was fantastic that Elton did that for him. The Union is a great album. RIP Leon.

I love this episode of Petty Tube. Tom’s story about Leon Russell and the ” Dark Glasses” is a classic. Fast forward to when Leon is inducted into the R&RHOF. Elton John pours out his heart as he introduces Leon.. Leon the uses his cane to walk up to the podium. He then tells a story of how Elton, rescued him from the ” ditch of life” and gave him a new lease on life. It brought tears to my eyes.
